Research Assistance

As late as the early 19th Century, many Germans who settled in Jefferson County retained their language and customs. Here are some examples of signatures located in the Miscellaneous Bonds book

  • Henry Bear = Henreich bärr (1808)
  • Matthias Moyers (1807)
  • Johan Moyers (1818)

Interestingly, Jacob Moyers signed his name in English script in 1826. And, Michael Branner signed his name on multiple occasions in 1808 as Mickel Brenner.
