The State of Tennessee did not require local governments to report deaths until 1908. In 1914, death records contained genealogical information, such as date and place of birth and names of parents.
In rural areas, such as Jefferson County, death records usually are inconsistent until the 1920's. Do not be surprised if you fail to find records prior to 1920.
Early death records are not maintained in Jefferson County. They are kept by the State in Nashville. The State of Tennessee has a detailed explanation of birth records on its Web site. TSLA offers limited look-up services by mail for a fee. Click here for details.

Death certificates are considered confidential for 50 years in Tennessee. After the 50-year period has passed, researchers may view original certificates on microfilm at the Tennessee State Library & Archives and several other research libraries in the state. The McClung Historical Collection in Knoxville has copies of microfilm of released death records for the entire state.
