The Jefferson County Veterans Memorial being constructed on the green space at White Pine City Hall is nearing completion.
White Pine City Council members were given an update on the project during a recent monthly Council meeting.
Jimmy Hammond has served devotedly as the de facto organizer and director of a volunteer group, mostly veterans, who have been working on the memorial over the past few weeks.
The volunteers have already poured and finished the concrete pad where the monument will ultimately rest, and the monument itself should be ready in about six to eight weeks. This project has been stalled in the works for a number of years, but now it's looking as though it will soon become a reality.
The White Pine Senior Citizens Center has been holding fund-raisers during the past weeks, and they've sold enough memorial bricks to purchase four concrete benches to be placed near the memorial.
Hammond said the overall cost is $19,580, of which contributors have helped to pay $9,450, so they can still use all the help they can get.
Anyone interested in donating to help pay for the Jefferson County Veterans Memorial may contact David Bugg at (865) 397-7334, or send a check or purchase a memorial brick by mail. The address is Jefferson County Veterans Memorial Committee, POB 1095, White Pine, TN 37890.
