Physicians & Surgeons
The earliest recorded doctor in Jefferson County Court Minutes is a Dr. Irvin in 1796. A Doctor Neilson is mentioned in the list of debtors of the estate of David Grier prepared about 1805 (see separate article), but there is no indication of his location.
Early physicians practiced medicine in their offices, which were usually located in their homes. The daybooks (account ledgers) of Dr. Archabald Blackburn, who practiced in the New Market area, are in the Jefferson County Museum & Archives collection.
