From the earliest times, taxes were assessed against individuals (polls), real property, and certain personal property. Taxpayers were enumerated by Militia Company prior to 1836, the year Tennessee counties were partitioned into Civil Districts by legislative act. Many early tax lists have been published in books and periodicals. Some are available on-line. The Tennessee State Library & Archives offers limited look-up services by mail for a fee.
