Mossy Creek – Squire James M. Ashmore died suddenly about 5 o'clock this morning. He had arisen about fifteen minutes before and taken a seat before the fire. Death came quickly and apparently without pain.

Squire Ashmore was one of the best citizens of Mossy Creek and Jefferson county. He was 70 years of age and the best part of his life was spent here. He was for twenty-five years a member of the Jefferson County court and for twelve years postmaster at this place. He leaves three sons, all well known in the business world, William M. of Knoxville, and H. A. and John of this place.
