In 1864, county court minutes contain the following information: William Tillett, guardian of James W. Newman, received $1495 in Confederate bank notes for the services of Newman as a substitute for Samuel Caldwell in the Confederate Army. Newman died on January 3, 1863 -- after the money was paid. Newman was apparently under 21, since his death and this transaction is in the guardian reports. |
